EATING THE RAINBOW

Eating the rainbow…you must be thinking what does that mean?

Well, eating the rainbow means eating all sorts of colourful food, which means consuming all the vegetables and fruits in all their colourful vibrance. Vegetables and fruits are gold mines of nutrients, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They hold within themselves the goodness that our body and mind need to remain healthy. Maintaining the perfect balance of veggies and fruits in one’s diet is very important as they increase our immunity, they improve overall recovery and performance. Sometimes all you need is a good and healthy recovery which further gets you better results in all your endeavours. 

The colour in all the vegetables and fruits is symbolic of the nutrients they consist of, along with that the specific colour is caused due by the presence of phytonutrients, these are chemicals that protect the plants from germs, sun’s harsh ray’s, bugs and threats. Hence the rainbow is important. 

Let’s see what are some of the benefits of having a colourful plate of food for every meal:

  1. Orange and Yellow Foods 

Orange and yellow foods like papayas, mangos, yellow bell peppers, bananas, oranges, pumpkins and sweet corn are protectors of your nervous system, heart and eyes. They also make the bones and immunity stronger.

  1. Green Foods

 Green foods like spinach, green grapes, peas, zucchini, broccoli, kiwi, green apples, cabbage, green beans work for improving eye health, and protect eyes from age-related muscular degeneration. They protect you from cancer and high levels of bad cholesterol, improve the digestive and immune systems. 

  1. Red Foods 

Red Foods like apples, cranberries, red bell peppers, red cabbage, tomatoes, raspberries, cherries, and watermelons are foods that protect your heart. The red colour in most of the fruits means that they contain antioxidants that prevent hypertension and high cholesterol. They also work to prevent your body from developing cancer and improves the brain’s functioning.

  1. White Foods

 Yes there white coloured foods too. These include onions, turnips, white peaches, pears, mushrooms, potatoes and bananas. These foods are known for their immunity-boosting effect on the body. Along with that, they also lower your blood pressure and bad cholesterol. Nutrients that are present in these white foods protect the body from breast, prostate and colon cancer.

  1. Blue and Purple Foods

Blue and Purple foods like blueberries, eggplant, grapes, figs, plums, purple potatoes, purple cabbage help in preventing strokes and cancer. These are foods that are supremely useful for your sharp memory and promote healthy ageing. Blue and purple foods also protect the urinary tract and improve the digestive system.

 Hence we can see that if you eat a plate full of colours every day, your risk of developing two most dangerous problems- Cancer and Heart diseases is bound to go down. Along with that most of your bodily functions and systems will stay in line and won’t cause you any trouble. You owe your body that much. So eat the rainbow as regularly as you can to stay fit not just on the outside but also on the inside.
